Lessons learnt from supporting Public Engagement with Research at a single institution and across a network

In 2019 Wellcome experimented with different public engagement (PE) funding models. The Institutional Research Engagement Fund (IREF) piloted devolved funding in partnership with the Scottish Public Engagement Network (ScotPEN) and the University of Oxford. Three years on, the pilot has come to an end, having funded 43 ambitious projects, using innovative funding processes based around local decision-making.

This workshop will bring together teams and awardees from the University of Oxford and ScotPEN, and Helix, our external evaluators. We will reflect on the benefits IREF has brought to our local PE landscape and how these can inform practice and experience more widely across the sector.

We will also discuss the differences and similarities of our approaches and how challenges in achieving effective and meaningful public engagement can be addressed by different funding models.

Whether you are a funder, a public engagement professional, an engaged researcher or a community member, we are interested in hearing from you and to discuss how our collective experience can help shape PE funding in the future.
