Introduction
UCL Institute of Education is working with the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) as part of the Engage Watermark programme. The Watermark is an award assessed by NCCPE that recognises and supports universities to embed public engagement across their work.
Similar to a charter mark, the Engage Watermark is an award granted to institutions, faculties or research centres that demonstrate strategic support for public engagement and a commitment to improving that support. It signals that engagement runs through the fabric of the institution.
When we talk about public engagement, what do we mean?
Public engagement is a term used in a variety of sectors, from arts and heritage to science policy and local government. While in some sectors it has a precise definition, in others it is used more flexibly.
The NCCPE defines public engagement broadly, to encompass the many and varied ways university staff and students engage with people, groups and communities outside the institution. This covers a range of types of engagement, for instance civic or community engagement, patient involvement, collaborative research, student engagement, etc. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit.

We estimate the survey will take around 10 minutes to complete (longer if you choose to provide more detailed feedback). You will need to complete the survey in one go as you are unable to save your answers before they are submitted.

We will not ask you to give your name, or any other information that could identify you. This means it will not be possible to remove your responses from the record after you have submitted them.
We will store all your responses securely in files held on Microsoft services hosted by the University of the West of England, Bristol. The data are accessible only to members of the NCCPE; access requires multifactor authorisation using institutional names and passwords. Before we store the responses, we will remove any information that could be used to identify a person or organisation.
Your responses will not be shared with UCL Institute of Education. We will draw on them in our report to UCL Institute of Education and while we may use quotes from the responses in the report text, your organisation will not be named.
