Fantasy Islands: Designing a Better Doctoral Student Journey

The session examines doctoral training: what is missing, what is needed, and what could be radically altered to move the next generation of researchers into meeting the needs of a future society. Two case studies will be shared: Undisciplined Spaces at KCL and Collaboratory from Nottingham and Leicestershire. Building on this participants will be asked to design two conceptual islands in groups: one that addresses points prescient to the current doctoral experience and one that imagines what future doctoral experiences could be. The content of the workshop will be driven entirely by participants voices, experiences and reflections.
