The London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) at Hammersmith Hospital is a directly funded MRC biomedical research institute that enjoys close links with its partners at Imperial College London and at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. LMS research focuses on strengthening the basic science underpinning our understanding of human diseases as well as its translation for health benefit.

As Head of Communications and Engagement for the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences, you will lead the LMS’s communication, public engagement and outreach programmes, acting as an advocate for the LMS and for science. You will be responsible for formulating and delivering an innovative communications and public engagement strategy for the Institute, and for raising external income to support outreach projects (https://lms.mrc.ac.uk/public-engagement-2/ ).

You will develop the LMS’s communication with the public and support scientific leaders with the dissemination of their research. This will involve creating and developing a diverse programme of engagement and communication initiatives including competitions, high-profile exhibitions and media events. Your role will involve liaison with external organisations and practitioners, broadcasters and journalists.

Your background will encompass science, communication, public engagement, project management, relationship management, education, editorial and new media. You will have experience of scientific writing, and be able to convey complex concepts simply and clearly.

It is an exciting time to join the LMS as we embark on our next five-year funding cycle and near the completion of our new building (2022 delivery). In the GECo team this year we will be redesigning the Institute website, implementing our new branding, celebrating ten years of Suffrage Science – women in science awards scheme and delivering the Engaging Libraries project with our community partners.
