We help universities engage with the public

The University of Aberdeen

Aberdeen catalyst

The University of Aberdeen is committed to achieving distinctive excellence in all its areas of endeavour including the vital objective of engaging with society. We have a considerable track record of public engagement becoming ever more embedded in our core business. Fundamentally it is the quality and creativity of our own staff and students that make us stand out in this exciting arena. Therefore, in the preparation of our RCUK Catalyst Proposal we placed our University community at the heart of our approach.

Our Catalyst project is all about implementing a University-wide public engagement with research strategy that interfaces seamlessly with our researcher development strategy so as to provide a cohesive and progressive model. We are anchoring our approach into key areas of University strategy including research excellence, student and staff development, civic responsibility and student experience. We are taking advantage of cross disciplinary approaches and collaborations in order to achieve creative models for sustainable public engagement.

Aberdeen catalyst

Our project has set up a structure of centrally-based project officers for public engagement with research working alongside part-time coordinators in each of our three academic Colleges. This team interfaces regularly with other University teams including representatives from research and innovation, communications, alumni and marketing in order to exploit cross-team working and ensure opportunities to embed public engagement across all activities are maximised.
