UCL Culture invites applications for the post of Public Engagement Manager (SLMS).
Duties and responsibilities
This role will contribute to the development and delivery of the UCL Public Engagement Strategy within the context of the UCL Culture Manifesto. The post holder will work with Engagement team and wider UCL Culture colleagues to champion a culture of public engagement across UCL and enable the UCL community to be effective in public engagement activity.
The post holder will become part of a trio of Public Engagement Managers who each provide public engagement for one or more of UCL’s major schools through the provision of advice and guidance, training, mentoring and brokerage activities. They will also support our public engagement funding schemes and seek to embed a strategic approach to public engagement.
In this case, the post holder will provide a public engagement consultancy service for the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS). SLMS consists of four UCL faculties representing one of the largest and most prestigious aggregations of academics in biomedical, life and population health sciences. The School has a global reputation for teaching informed by leading research.
The Engagement team works to support both institutional change and the multiple departmental and individual journeys which combine to create a culture of collaboration and dialogue between the university and the world outside. It comprises the Public Engagement team, the Community Engagement team, the Evaluation team and the Schools Engagement team. Since 2008, the Public Engagement team has worked to embed public engagement across the institution through funding opportunities, training schemes, and bespoke advice for departments and UCL staff and students and is an active contributor to Public Engagement at a national and international level.
The successful candidate will have experience of advising on public engagement as part of the research cycle. They will have a degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience, an understanding of best practice and research into the effectiveness of public engagement and knowledge of how universities and higher education contribute to the generation of knowledge and societal impact. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, the ability to develop sustainable relationships and influence a broad range of colleagues and stakeholders. Also important, is the ability to support others to creatively develop and implement their own public engagement ideas.
