UCL Culture invites applications for the post of Head of Public Engagement.

Duties and responsibilities

This role will lead on delivering and developing UCL’s Public Engagement Strategy and UCL Culture’s programme of public engagement training, funding and opportunities. 

The post holder will strengthen UCL Culture’s contribution to UCL’s Research Excellence Framework, including working with the Head of Evaluation and Engagement and Impact Consultant to advise on relevant Impact Case Studies. The post holder will also lead on the piloting of a more targeted UCL Culture-wide offer to individual UCL departments or research entities drawing on UCL Culture-wide expertise in engagement. 

This role will position UCL Culture as a key provider of researcher development and student experience opportunities as well as ensuring that work on public engagement in the curriculum is aligned with UCL’s Connected Curriculum and broader institutional strategy. 

The Engagement team works to support both institutional change and the multiple departmental and individual journeys which combine to create a culture of collaboration and dialogue between the university and the world outside. It comprises the Public Engagement team, the Community Engagement team, the Evaluation team and the Museums Outreach team. Since 2008, the Public Engagement team has worked to embed public engagement across the institution through funding opportunities, training schemes, and bespoke advice for departments and UCL staff and students and is an active contributor to Public Engagement at a national and international level.

Key requirements

The successful candidate will have experience of advising on public engagement as part of the research cycle and an understanding of best practice and research into the effectiveness of public engagement.  They will have proven ability of leading a multi-disciplinary team, devising and implementing strategy and excellent interpersonal, advising and influencing skills.  They will have the ability to develop sustainable relationships with a diverse range of colleague and excellent oral and written communication skills and a degree or equivalent experience.
