We help universities engage with the public

University of Surrey

Why we've signed the Manifesto

"The University of Surrey has an established history of research excellence and also of translating our knowledge into activity that benefits national and international communities. We have signed the Manifesto to mark the commitment we have made in placing public engagement at the heart of all we do. We will build upon our partnerships with stakeholders to use our research and scholarship talents to enhance the culture and quality of life in our communities to the greater benefit of society."

Professor Sir Christopher M Snowden, Vice Chancellor, University of Surrey

Our approach to public engagement

University of SurreyOur focus on engagement begins with research, where we seek to actively involve the public who help to shape and inform our thinking as it progresses. Alongside this we look for opportunities to deliver teaching activities that have a positive impact upon our community and enhance the engagement abilities of our students. By working actively with wider society in knowledge-exchange and sharing regionally, nationally and internationally we support economic development and growth. Engagement is core to our operation, as a responsible employer, as a socially responsible neighbour and as a force for social good.

We aim to create a culture within the University of Surrey where public engagement is formalised and embedded as a valued and recognised activity for staff at all levels and for students. This will create the conditions within which an ‘ecosystem’ for public engagement flourishes naturally, where enthusiasm is recognised, rewarded and encouraged and is supported by a robust infrastructure.
