I think that there are probably three rationales for why engagement matters - I think. One, I think it is rather core to what universities do. I think it enhances the nature and quality of research work being undertaken by universities. I think also that in terms of the teaching and learning it can provide really valuable learning experiences for students through various forms of community involvement - student volunteering and service learning when it's embedded in the curriculum. But I also think that in the wider sense of universities are publicly funded institutions and they have a responsibility to the public to show the value of HEIs more broadly for the public good - and I think that is something that vice chancellors are increasingly beginning to recognize.
