Action Research Groups

Action research is an approach to explore an issue through reflection and action. We are using this approach to explore the unique characteristics of higher education institutions (HEIs) and the culture change needed to embed public engagement in them. We are using a process called ‘Systemic or whole system action research’ to support understanding and change across a large system, such as the HE sector.

We have set up multiple small groups - each with participants drawn from a specific role in higher education. For example: university department heads, senior academics, senior managers, and those working in human resources. Many other combinations are possible, but it’s felt that persons in these same role, albeit at different universities, will share common experiences or at least benefit from meeting with others from similar backgrounds.  The groups have now formed (though many are still open to new members!) and are exploring issues from their unique perspectives.

A central part of the whole process is to share the ideas and work emerging through these groups - amongst each other and more widely. To support this, the NCCPE recently hosted a large event, bringing together many group members alongside others not involved in the programme. A follow up report from this exciting day will be shared shortly.

Your contribution to this work is highly valued and we welcome ways to share and include a wide group of people with diverse perspectives. Please let us know if you’d like to participate.

Action Research Event

The Engaged University: Issues and Action - July 8th, Bristol

This modified ‘Open Space’ was organised to bring together participants from the NCCPE’s action research programme with others interested in understanding amd taking action to improve university public engagement. Delates came from across England, as well as from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland for this rare opportunity to network, reflect and contribute to future agendas for change in higher education. Stay tuned for the event report.

Joining a group

The existing groups have now all met at least once, with many meeting 3 or 4 times. Flowing from the large event recently held how we move forward with the groups and the programme will now be reviewed. Options include re-aligining groups to specific themes, not based on university roles, or taking forward the learning and recommended actions in a variety of ways. If you would like to get involved and would like to share your perspectives on the experience - please contact Heather on 0117 915 0178.
