‘Urban Transitions: climate change, global cities and the transformation of socio-technical systems’ (UTACC) is a three year project examining the ways in which cities around the world are responding to climate change. Home to over half of the world’s population, cities are significant sources of the greenhouse gases that lead to climate change and are also vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate. This project analyses how cities are addressing climate change through their energy and housing systems, and the social and technical factors that are shaping the possibilities for urban transitions in the face of a changing climate. In this special presentation on behalf of Transition Durham and the Beacon Programme for Public Engagement, Vanesa Castán Broto will present and discuss preliminary findings from the first phase of the project, a scoping study of 100 cities worldwide.

Vanesa Castán Broto is a post-doctoral Research Associate at the department of Geography in Durham University developing the theoretical and empirical evidence base for the UTACC project and responsible for its communication strategy. She has an interdisciplinary background in engineering and environmental sociology and has worked both in policy organisations and academia. Prior to joining the Geography department, she completed an Engineering Doctorate at the University of Surrey on the development on environmental controversy and environmental engineering, studying a case of land regeneration in the western Balkans.
