Open University LogoThe NCCPE has partnered the Open University and the BBC to run this event, aimed at stimulating discussion about the role of broadcast in engaging publics with research.

Hosted by Brigid Heywood (OU) and Paul Manners (NCCPE), the day will start with a welcome from Martin Bean (OU).

Following this provocative talks by Mary Beard (Cambridge University), Tristram Hunt (University of London) and Martin Davidson (BBC) will explore how the media can engage people with academic research - and some of  the opportunites and challenges in doing this for all involved. There will then be an opportunity for delegates to discuss some of the themes with a panel made up of the speakers.

The afternoon provides an opportunity to find out about case studies of different approaches to engaging the public with research and will include Bang Goes the Theory, Silverville, Ideas Lab and Child of Our Time. Following this delegates will be able to explore emergent issues and opportunities from the day and develop proposals for new projects, partnerships and resources that could advance work in this area. The NCCPE will provide funding to support further development of some of these ideas.

 Themes for this event include:

  • Engaging with research
  • Designing for an audience: How broadcasters engage their publics
  • Researchers as broadcasters: How Web 2.0 has enabled researchers to directly engage with their publics

The event will end with a drinks reception for all participants.
