Why we’ve signed the Manifesto:

"In the School of Advanced Study we are dedicated to supporting research in the humanities. We therefore feel that it is absolutely fundamentally important that we do go out and engage the public and help build the public understand of what it is that we are doing in our research. We are delighted therefore to sign the Manifesto for Public Engagement. This reflects our now twenty year history of activity in this area, and represents an important landmark for the future."

Professor Roger Kain, CBE, FBA, PhD, DLit (London), Dean and Chief Executive of the School of Advanced Study.

"SAS is uniquely placed to play a leading role in facilitating public engagement activity in the humanities. As a national centre for supporting and promoting humanities research, it makes absolutely perfect sense that we should make public engagement a key part of our mission. In doing so we can help to change the research culture right across the sector, putting the public at the heart of what we do."

Dr Michael Eades, Cultural and Public Engagement Research Fellow, School of Advanced Study.

Our approach to public engagement

SAS building

The School of Advanced Study’s ongoing commitment to public engagement and open access to research can be seen in its year-round calendar of public events, its publications, podcasts and digital platforms for research, and its long term collaborative relationships with the Bloomsbury Festival and other cultural and community organisations.

In partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy the School also coordinates Being Human: the UK’s first national festival of the humanities. This festival is dedicated to fostering innovation in public engagement activity in the humanities, and has to date drawn the participation of over fifty research organisations working with over one hundred cultural and community partners across the UK.
