Summary: Paul Manners Presentation
Paul described how the Beacon project is about cultural and organisational change: to demonstrate how universities can go about changing their systems and processes, and their culture, so that public engagement is – in the words of the funders - ‘formalised and embedded as a valued and recognised activity for staff at all levels, and for students’.
In pursuit of this goal, the NCCPE has synthesised a framework that captures the key areas that need attention during this change process. These have been grouped into three areas:
- Purpose (incorporating Leadership and Mission)
- Partnership (incorporating the engagement of staff, students and public)
- Process (incorporating Support, Learning and Reward and Recognition)
Today’s focus is on the last one of these focal points: reward and recognition, acknowledging the crucial role that this plays in demonstrating to staff and students that their institution genuinely values public engagement.
The NCCPE has developed a set of self-assessment tools for each of these key areas which identifies a number of focal points for each. For reward and recognition these include incorporating discussion of PE into appraisals, and highlighting it in promotions criteria and job descriptions and through awards.
This framework has been used to design the rest of the morning’s session. Later, delegates would be given the chance to join tables to share their experiences of these different focal points.
