Summary: Caroline Ward Presentation

The second challenge was provided by Caroline Ward, Partnership Manager for the Connect and Create project at the BBC in Manchester, who gave a brief presentation about how the BBC reward and recognise staff for engaging with the public.

Caroline’s first point was that this work is driven by the BBC’s commitment to its six public purposes:

‘our audiences are constantly changing and we need to keep up with that pace of change to stay relevant to these audiences’.

BBC staff are encouraged to do at least 3 days a year volunteering as part of their job, and Connect and Create provides a vehicle for this: staff are supported to work with charities and community organisations to support them in developing creative skills.

Caroline emphasised the mutual benefit: staff gain hands-on experience whilst broadening their horizons and skills; charities benefit from staff expertise; and together this creates mutual understanding.

Caroline ended by posing a challenge to the delegates:

What does reward and recognition look like from the outside-inwhat would a university that worked in this way look like?
